Sportsmanship

We required that all participants in our ball program (and their parents, family & friends) exhibit good sportsmanship and sign agreements to do so.

To provide ongoing reminders as necessary, volunteers from each team were recruited to serve as Sportsmanship Managers. Their role was to enjoy the game and ensure everyone that everyone else did as well --- and not at the expense of others. we extend thanks again to them for being proactive for the “good of the team”.   No matter what the sport, good sportsmanship is essential if it's to be fun for everyone.

 *We operated a recreational ball program for over 40 years before The Stanley Park Community Association took it over as of 2024.  Good sportsmanship is essential for all sports

   Sportsmanship Supervisors

Each team should have a “sportsmanship” supervisor. (This was mandatory for all Senior T-Ball, Junior 3-Pitch and Senior 3-Pitch teams. Volunteers fulfilling this role may vary from game to game.)
These volunteers are responsible for reviewing the sportsmanship material and ensuring that all of their team’s players, coaching staff, parents, and other spectators adhere to good sportsmanship guidelines at each game throughout the season and act proactively to deal with any issues that arise. There may be different volunteer(s) fulfilling the role at each game but there must be at least one (except for Blastball and Junior T-Ball leagues) wearing the visibility vest. The Supervisor will introduce themselves to the umpires and the other team's Supervisor and coaches before each game, work with any assigned game officials and provide them with support whether requested or not. (Note: Effective as of 2020, ALL participants are required to sign sportsmanship contracts as part of the registration process so everyone has agreed to exhibit good sportsmanship or  be prepared to leave the premises.)

Supervisors are to be pro-active and act on questionable issues - generally in conjunction with the other team’s Supervisor who is responsible for their own team's behaviour and issues. Supervisors are NOT to be involved with the rules of the game nor their interpretation. They are to deal with behavioural issues (e.g. abuse of officials, delaying tactics, smoking, use of tobacco, language, etc.), and are empowered to eject anyone for unacceptable behaviour (after a warning).  While empowered to be anywhere on the field, even during play, their role is generally to watch and enjoy the game. At the game's conclusion, the Supervisors should help pversee any post-game “hand-shakes” and ensure behaviour is appropriate.  This now includes health considerations regarding: touching, closeness, etc. in addition toundesirable behavious such as hat-flipping, slapping, flippant or derogatory remarks, etc.).  Sportsmanship supervisors confirm that everyone enjoyed the game, including the umpires, and if not, find out why.

People with issues regarding sportsmanship should contact their team’s representative - or become the rep.!  IF the issue is with another team then the supervisor should contact the other team’s supervisor directly (and in confidence).  A league convenor can coordinate this activity.

As with many other sports associations, we have a ZERO TOLERANCE for abuse policy and a “Tobacco Free” policy, so be visible and pro-active.
